Rounding Up 2020 - Our December Newsletter

Hi there,

It would be around now in the term that we’d be having our annual Yule Ball, a chance to celebrate everything we’d got up to this term and enjoy the company of fellow fans. Obviously, that isn’t the case this year, but we thought it’d be worth sending a quick message to say thank you for every single person who has gotten involved with anything we did this term, whether it’s been every event or just one, and how much you’ve gotten involved when you’ve come

We’ve gotten up to a variety of digital activities this term, from our scavenger hunt in Freshers Week to our baking social in November. To every person who has attended, thank you so much for getting involved and engaging with whatever we ran. It’s certainly been challenging, but you have shown us a fantastic response throughout all of the uncertainty of this term, and we hope to maintain this support as we move into the spring term, so please do heep an eye on our social media for details about Term 2 membership and events.

In addition, this term we welcomed three new members of our committee, all of whom have gotten entirely stuck in with everything their role might involve, and we really look forward to seeing what they bring in the new year. There are going to be opportunities to further get involved next term, so please do keep your eyes out, as these opportunities are open to every member.

We’d also like to sincerely thank everyone who has donated to our #AllWizardsAreWelcome fundraiser, up to the day of writing making £132. The fundraiser for Mermaids remains open, and we are still looking into how best we can show our support for our transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse members, making sure anyone and everyone feels welcome in our society, a fight made all the more important with news in recent days.

2020 has been tough throughout, with challenges being thrown at everyone every single day, but we also need to take positivity in whatever good news we can, with the prospect of a vaccine drawing ever nearer, and the international Harry Potter community standing up for every member. It’s reasonable to say that it has been difficult to be hopeful, but we must take any opportunity for positivity, and just as importantly, kindness. We will keep checking our social media throughout the break, so if at any point you want to reach out, we are here to listen.

We hope you have a calm and productive winter break, and we’ll see you back in January with another term of events, no matter what form they may take. If you celebrate it, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

Magical regards,

Callum, Kieron, Valerie, Georgia, Shriya, Tristan, and Kim HPQSoc Committee 2020/2021
