If you're wanting this newsletter straight to your inbox a day earlier, then purchase your Term 1 membership via the Exeter Guild website

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for joining Harry Potter and Quidditch Society. We’re happy to have you here. This is the first of our monthly newsletters, keeping you up to date with everything going on with the society.

Keeping in Touch

If you’re wanting to make sure you’re up to date with everything we’re doing, then you should follow us on our social media pages:

If you’re wanting to take part in discussions in all things Harry Potter, then you can also join our Discord server at https://discord.gg/F3sKAFW.

Our Events

Even despite our events being restricted to purely virtual, we are still determined to bring you an interesting and varied schedule of socials throughout this term. Our next event is a virtual version of our annual sorting ceremony where members will be able to get together for a night of games, as well as the opportunity for any fans unsure to find out which house they are part of. That’s going to be this Thursday (24th) from 6:30pm. Details on how to get involved can be found on our Facebook page, or by the event page on the Students’ Guild website. Future events will be published on our social media outlets, as we’re still working away on a few ideas.

If you follow our social media, you will have seen that this year we are both trying to get the word out that everyone is welcome in the Harry Potter fandom, and are also raising money for Mermaids, one of the UK’s leading LGBTQ+ charities. This is following comments made by JK Rowling, and we just want to reaffirm to all members that discrimination of any kind is not welcome in our society and that we fully stand with our transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse members. Thank you so much for everyone who’s gotten involved so far, and we’re proud to say that within the first week we’ve managed to raise just over £100. If you want to contribute, you can find our fundraiser at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/university-of-exeter-harry-potter-quidditch-society.

Quidditch

We are aware there are a number of people who are wondering what Quidditch is like. Due to current NGB and university guidelines, we are unfortunately unable to run training sessions as of the moment, though are committed to training sessions as soon as they’re allowed. If you are interested in Quidditch, please drop our team a message at www.facebook.com/UoEQuidditch, or www.instagram.com/exetereagles. We’d love to hear from you and let you know about the game, even if we can’t physically show it at the moment.

Leadership Opportunities

You may have noticed that our society committee is down a few key members. It is currently our plan to run an election this term to elect a few of the currently unfilled positions for the remainder of the committee’s term. The roles available would include:

  • Vice President

  • Social Secretary

  • Publicity Secretary

If you are interested, or have any queries about what the roles would entail, drop us a message by social media or email harrypottersoc@groups.exeterguild.com. If leading this year seems too daunting but you feel you might be interested in being part of the 2021/2022 committee, then watch this space as there will be opportunities later in the year.

Finally, we know this year so far has hardly been what we hoped for, but we can still all make the best of it. Please keep safe, be smart, and be kind, and we’ll all get through this. We hope to see you at some of our events, and hope you’re looking forward to them too.
